China Paused New Battery-Storage Approvals. Here's the Lesson for India

China just admitted its battery industry has a problem money can't fix. Authorities have paused approvals for new battery-storage manufacturing projects, not because demand is falling, but because scale has outrun sustainability. Rapid expansion, brutal competition, falling prices, overcapacity: projects already under construction aren't affected, but this is about what gets built next.

Building gigafactories was the easy part of this industry. The harder part is whether the ecosystem around them, raw materials, supply chains, demand, recovery, recycling, can actually hold up. India is building battery capacity right now, at the exact moment the rest of the world is asking if it built too much. That's not a warning. It's a head start, if it's used right.

The real opportunity isn't more cells. It's a value chain that's resilient end to end, from material to manufacturing, and back to recovery. Capacity without an ecosystem eventually becomes a liability. China just proved it.
